In recognition of International Women's Day, a group of FEMEN activists occupied the Place de la Concorde in Paris on Sunday, where they staged a protest with cleaning gear to symbolically clean the popular square of the "patriarchal virus."

The bare-breasted group of women was seen spewing purple smoke in the air and chanting "vital emergency, patriarchal virus" as they held up signs.

"They have appropriated a space that is ordinarily used by men and it is strong. We are changing the representations of women. We create strong, powerful women in the public space, who impose themselves, who do not hesitate to challenge the police or passers-by. It's good, we are changing mentalities and popular imagery," said Sophia Antoine, a spokesperson for the group.

The police later dispersed the activists.

According to the NousToutes citizen collective, 17 women have been killed by their partner or ex-partner this year, as of March 7. There were 151 reported femicides in 2019.
