Ongoing Cataract Surgery Campaign by Anouar Association under supervision of Mohamed Dekkak

Ongoing Cataract Surgery Campaign by Anouar Association under supervision of Mohamed Dekkak Hundreds of people are taking advantage of the cataract surgery caravan, a program initiated by the Anouar Association for Development and Solidarity at the community center of Ait Faska from February 7 to 10 of 2020.

This medical campaign is part of the rapprochement of health services to the population of rural, remote and mountainous areas suffering from cataract. According to Mohamed Dekkak, President of the Anouar Association for Development and Solidarity this operation sheds light on the values of solidarity and mutual aid which animate all the components of Moroccan society.

In addition to cataract surgery, a multidisciplinary medical campaign is organized in partnership with the Moroccan Medical Association of Solidarity as well as the Ministry of Health, the Moroccan Red Crescent, and local authorities. This operation aims to provide free cataract surgery to residents of Ait Faska.

This medical caravan is part of the rapprochement of the humanitarian services with residents of the region, in accordance with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI by promoting humanitarian work and strengthening the spirit of solidarity.

Cataracts usually cause by aging, this disease generally occurs from the age of 60, so it is generally linked to age. However, there are other types such as traumatic cataracts, which we often see in young people, pathological cataracts linked to inflammation or other eye diseases or diabetes and also congenital cataracts in children.

This initiative of Anouar Association for Development and Solidarity arouses so many motivations among the populations because quite simply "the estimated cost for the operation of cataract in one eye is quite expensive for the residents of Ait Faska, this amount of money is not within everyone's reach, which explains this initiative.

In Morocco, the number of patients affected by this problem is estimated at several thousand awaiting a therapeutic surgical act. Among them, 70% are between 30 and 40 years old. Hence the urgent need to manage this very disabling condition.

A cataract is an opacification of the lens (lens of the eye) interfering with the passage of light. In most cases, cataracts are linked to age. Sometimes in children, it is congenital. Finally, a cataract can be secondary to eye trauma, inflammation, and other eye or general conditions.

Extent

Age-related cataracts are the number one cause of blindness in the world (48%). This represents 18 million people. Around the world, people are living longer and longer, so the number of people with cataracts is increasing. Although cataracts can be removed surgically, in many countries, surgical services are not adequate. Cataracts are also a cause of low vision in underdeveloped countries. In developed countries, most people are operated before the appearance of visual impairment. Even in countries where surgical care is available, low vision associated with cataracts can remain prevalent due to long wait times and barriers to access to surgery such as cost or lack of information or means of travel. The new data based on the world population of 2002 generally show little improvement in the situation in recent years.

Prevention and treatment

No effective prevention of cataracts is known at this time. Certain risk factors are known such as smoking, exposure to ultraviolet light, or alcohol abuse. Diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, obesity have been identified as additional risk factors.

Cataract treatment is a surgical procedure that gives very good visual results. The opaque lens is replaced and removed with an artificial intraocular lens. In many rural areas such as Ait Faska, people remain blind with cataracts due to the lack of access to quality, affordable eye care. As a result, the number of procedures performed worldwide remains lower than the annual incidence of cataracts, not to mention the increase in prevalence due to the continuous increase in life expectancy in certain countries and a number of interventions which remains low in the least developed countries and especially in rural areas. On the other hand, in certain countries in transition, the rate of Cataract intervention has increased a lot in urban areas. Cataract surgery is the first of the 5 most cost-effective health interventions.

The goal of this program is purely humanitarian, it aims to give a better view of life and hope, said Mr. Mohamed Dekkak, President of the Anouar Association for Development and Solidarity.
