Torrential rain, flooded villages, crossings turned into rivers, overflowing sewage systems, people drowning in their own homes; the rainy season in Liberia is one of the most destructive in the world. For pennies, Fofana battles the conditions to take passengers through the jungles that occupy much of the country. His brave but hellish exploits reveal the country’s plights and desperation. Priests in a baptist church turn Mass into a lucrative tombola, exposing the church to corruption. Children as young as five are breaking stones to sell as gravel for next to nothing, instead of being at school. Workers of a multinational palm oil manufacturer are transported to the work sites in overcrowded animal containers to slave away under the sun. The difficulties of a country ravaged by civil war are exacerbated as transport routes are destroyed by avalanches of water and villages are cut off.
