Sounds logical, but you never know where the divot is going to end up that way. Usually it is going to drift forward and pop out the front of the notch. But I have seen it drift left and right.
That being said... there really are times when you're going to have to use this "cut the notch first" technique. I give examples within of those rare occasions and, as I recommend you do also, practice this rarely needed technique.
