Bow Drill, Cutting The Notch Before The Burn In Is A REALLY Bad Idea But Sometimes Necessary.

Bow Drill, Cutting The Notch Before The Burn In Is A REALLY Bad Idea But Sometimes Necessary. All Bow Drillers eventually wonder... why cut the divot with my knife, do the burn in, then loose all that hard earned heat while stopping to cut the notch? Wouldn't it make more sense to cut the divot with my knife, cut the notch, THEN do the burn in and go for the ember at the same time???
Sounds logical, but you never know where the divot is going to end up that way. Usually it is going to drift forward and pop out the front of the notch. But I have seen it drift left and right.
That being said... there really are times when you're going to have to use this "cut the notch first" technique. I give examples within of those rare occasions and, as I recommend you do also, practice this rarely needed technique.
Be prepared for the Animal LOVE in the first two minutes of this video. I introduce you to my 3 dogs and 2 cats.
