WASHINGTON - The US Navy conducted more freedom of navigation operations in 2020 than any year since the US began to more aggressively challenge Chinese claims in the South China Sea in 2019. The Navy conducted nine FONOPs in the South China Sea last year, according to records provided by the US Pacific Fleet. FONOP is designed to challenge China's claim to maritime rights and power over several island chains in the region, which has put the US and its allies at odds with China.
