Muslims in Dhaka protest over deadly India unrest

Muslims in Dhaka protest over deadly India unrest (28 Feb 2020) Thousands of Bangladeshi Muslims marched through streets by a mosque in downtown Dhaka on Friday to protest against this week's communal violence in India which left at least 40 dead and hundreds injured.

The protestors denounced Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's new citizenship law that has inflamed communal tensions between Hindus and Muslims.

They threw shoes at banners depicting Modi and later burned a portrait of him.

Many carried posters reading "Stop killing Muslims" and "Save Indian Muslims."

Nur Hossain Kasemi, Vice-President of Hefajat-e-Islam, one of the protesting Islamic organizations, threatened to surround Dhaka's international airport to prevent Modi from entering Bangladesh, if Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina does not cancel his upcoming official visit.

But he asked the Bangladeshi Muslims to show restraint and not harm non-Muslims in Bangladesh.

The passage of a citizenship law in India in December that fast-tracks naturalization for some religious minorities from neighboring countries - but not Muslims - earlier spurred massive protests across the country.
